Buenos Aires, Argentina – San Lorenzo supporters say they were conned out of their old land during the military dictatorship. Nearly two thousand Argentine football fans marched on the French embassy in Buenos Aires on Thursday in a protest against a Carrefour supermarket that stands on the land of their old stadium. San Lorenzo de Almagro is one of the oldest teams in the country and originates from the city’s Boedo neighborhood. However, in 1979, while the country was under the grip of a fierce dictatorship, the club says they were forced to sell the stadium for a low sum. A large French-owned supermarket now stands on the spot, and San Lorenzo fans want the chain to give it back. Adolfo Res, a historian for the club, has handed a claim to the city authorities. A car park and large Carrefour store now stand where the old Gasometro stadium once stood. In 1993, a new stadium was built, after years of renting elsewhere, but the new Gasometro is deemed to be too far from the club’s historic cradle and is also in an unsavory area with a high crime rate. Committed fans gathered outside the embassy, chanting and waving club flags, hoping to raise awareness of their cause.
